Location of Nuwara Eliya

Sri Lanka’s hill country town of Nuwara Eliya is situated on the plains over looking Sri Lanka’s tallest mountain Pidurutalagala which is 2,252 meters high. This is where the British used to take their vacations when Sri Lanka was under British colonial rule.

Nuwara Eliya was founded in 1846 and most of the hotels are colonial style from this period. As you walk around this swank town, you will feel like you are back in the UK.

Activities

Here you can ride horses, play golf, paddle on Gregory’s Lake, and sip Ceylon Tea by the fire-place. Victoria Park is just a short walk away and is filled with exotic birds and plants.

The Climate

All year round the climate here is quite cool. When traveling up here, be sure to bring a sweater or a jacket, the elevation is 1,868 meters, and it maintains an average temperature of 16C. At night the temperature can drop to just above freezing.

Places to Stay

There are two main hotels that are centrally located.  Both are colonial style and have excellent food and service.

The Grand Hotel

Built in 1891, this hotel used to be the residence of one of the British governors.  This hotel is very popular with tour groups.

The Hill Club

Primarily a members only club but tourists can get a temporary membership.
